FA Trophy: Ramsgate 0 Rocks 2

MICK JENKINS' Rocks progressed to the next round of the FA Trophy thanks to a well-earned 1-0 victory at Ramsgate.

The Rocks kicked off playing into a fierce northerly wind.

Michael Byrne, recently signed on loan from Southampton, came into the side to make his debut in the centre of defence, with Steffan Gaisie dropping to the bench.

Ramsgate almost took an early lead when Wynter's excellent free-kick whistled just over Tardif's crossbar.

Bognor were finding it extremely difficult against the wind and a lively home attack and, after 15 minutes, they should have went a goal down.

Byrne allowed Stefan Ball to run clear and only a magnificent save from Tardif kept the score level.

The powerful Stefan Ball was looking very dangerous for Ramsgate and on several occasions he out-paced the visiting defenders.

Not for the first time, the Rocks again had Tardif to thank.

A rare attack from the Rocks after 30 minutes resulted in a Jordan Hughes shot, which came close.

Moments later, a great run and cross from Mike McEnery produced a strong header from Tom Clarke, which was well saved by the home keeper.

Mike McEnery opened the scoring for Bognor in the 36th minute when he received the ball on the right and cut inside to send an unstoppable shot into the far corner of the net.

Half Time: Ramsgate 0 Bognor 1.

Within minutes of the start of the second half, the same player had a wonderful chance to extend Bognor's lead but he shot straight at the home keeper from five yards out.

Ramsgate worked hard against the wind and on several occasions came close to grabbing an equaliser.

The Rocks, however, were working hard in midfield and McEnery always looked like creating scoring opportunities.

With 15 minutes to go, Ramsgate thought they had scored following a tremendous goalmouth scramble, but somehow the beleaguered Rocks' defence kept them out.

Ben Laslett's great run down the wing produced a wonderful opportunity for Ramsgate's Stefan Ball, but the big striker somehow managed to lob the ball wide of an open goal '“ much to the fury of the home fans.

With six minutes to go, Duncan Jupp wrapped things up for Bognor when he blasted a free-kick in from 20 yards.

The home keeper managed to get his fingertips to the ball, but could not prevent the clincher.

This was a gutsy performance by Bognor in very difficult conditions and manager Mick Jenkins said afterwards how delighted he was with the attitude of his players.
