FOOTBALL: EP and Golds exit John O'Hara Cup

EAST PRESTON Football Club missed numerous chances, and gifted Lancing two goals, as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at their division-lower opposition.

Lancers went ahead after just one minute when EP keeper Steve Colbourne failed to claim a cross and Lee Garnham headed home.

EP then dominated up until half-time but failed to take any of their chances. Phil Churchill had an effort cleared off the line, Charlie Oatway shot over, and Dan McLaughlin, in his first game of the season, headed wide.

Lancing doubled their lead immediately into the second half when Nick Loversidge punished poor EP play.

Churchill missed a close-range headed chance to close the deficit before Rob Partridge made it 3-0 on 66 minutes.

Charlie Oatway got it back to 3-1 with a tap-in from Terry Dodd's lob on 89 minutes. And Lancing keeper Richard Whittington was then sent-off for alleged foul and abusive language because he felt Oatway was offside. EP, though, were unable to make the man-advantage count in the closing stages.

Littlehampton assistant-manager Andy Baumfield was encouraged by his side's performance in their 3-0 defeat at division-higher Oakwood.

He said: "We are showing signs of improvement, and our midfield played well again.

"We created more chances than Oakwood, but the difference was they took theirs."

Oakwood went ahead on eight minutes when a cross was deflected into his own goal by Golds defender Dave Towers.
