In conditions rather akin to the film ‘Ice Station Zebra’ but without the snow, the Anvils put in a spirited performance and could perhaps consider themselves unfortunate not to have taken at least a point.
Mark Rigler and Sam Cane set-up Jeff Mahadoo to find a gap and give the Anvils a vital lead.
Chichester tried to respond with a Daren Pearce corner finding Matt Boulton but his powerful header was just too high.
A Pearce shot was pushed away by Matt Morrish only as far as Graham Bush who could only fire well over.
The second half was a real test of Anvil resolve as Chichester with the wind behind them came looking for goals.
A 40 yard crossfield ball from Justin Case found the head of Dan Hegarty whose looping header drifted past a stranded Morrish to score an equaliser,
On the hour mark it was all change on the Anvil bench with Harry Lowe replacing Hass Shurmani and Ciaran Steers on for Lee Thomas.
Down’s fate was decided when Hegarty took advantage of tired defending to notch in Chichester’s second goal.
Tom Frankland came off the bench and started to add pace and a stream of crosses that gave the Chichester defenders a real problem.
Frankland found Grant Rigler, whose shot caused chances were coming thick and fast with Mahadoo then forcing the keeper to his knees, added to this came more midfield driving runs from Cane being denied by some dubious tackles that went unpunished.
But the main threat came from Frankland who clearly has the pace to go past defenders.
Crawley Down Gatwick: Morrish, Barnard (Frankland), Vinten, Wallis, Cooney, Day, Shurmani (Lowe), Cane, Mahadoo, Rigler, Thomas (Steers).
Man of the Match: Blair Cooney
