But in an interview with the Crawley Observer, the Reds boss defended himself. He said: "It’s my job to be honest to the fans. Sometimes it’s very difficult to be honest and please every one, while coming across as a grumpy b***ard - which I am not.

"But at the same time, I try to be as honest as I can because I can’t lie to people. We just got beat, yes I am miserable, but they are miserable at me for being miserable!"

Yems did find some positives in the Millwall defeat - even though that did not come across in the club's published interview.

He told us: "We had three boys making their debuts in professional football, one of them scored, you had young Tom [McGill] in goal from Brighton who was superb and you had Tyler Frost playing. For me that’s more important than the result.

"There loads of positives. We played against a Championship side that we went toe-to-toe with. We got another 90 minutes in - and that’s the first 90 minutes for some players on grass since March. We had no new injuries. And it was a good game.

"Loads of positives from the future.

"We played a Championship club, in a cup, were beaten 3-1 and what I was annoyed about was all three goals were preventable from my point of view."
