Crawley Town boss John Yems - 'The hard work starts now'

When Crawley Town lost 2-0 on the opening day to Port Vale, John Yems’ message to fans was ‘don’t panic’.

But just two weeks later, following a 3-2 win at Oldham Athletic, Yems’ message is ‘let’s not get carried away’.

The win over the Latics was the Reds’ first away win since Leyton Orient last August and it propelled them up to fourth in the League Two table. And with a home match against winless and bottom side Southend on Saturday, things are looking good for the men in red.

But Yems wants everyone to calm down and not get carried away – and says the hard work starts now.

He said: “Every win is a good one. We have got to make sure that we don’t get carried away with it. We have a tough game Saturday.

“It’s another win that will hopefully lead us on to a few more. The hard work doesn’t stop - it starts now and we have to work even harder now.

“You start worrying when you lose or get carried away when you win. You just keep focussing on the next game that’s coming around.”

And Yems is under no illusion how tough Saturday will be, despite the troubles and results at Southend. He said: “There are no such thing as easy games or easy wins. It all comes down to how we prepare and how we get going. At the moment the lads are working hard they have to keep stepping up and work even harder.

“We all know with this league, or any league, if you are not on your game and the other team are, you are going to get beat.

“We are still a work in progress. We have had three games and won two of them. Win or lose, let’s not get carried away by it. You can enjoy that winning feeling but you have to work hard to keep it going.”

Saturday was due to be the day fans returned to the People’s Pension Stadium, but latest lockdown measures put paid to that. And Yems has backed the Daily Mirror’s Save Our Sports campaign.

Yems told Observer Sport: “It would be good to see the fans back and I think they want to be back ASAP. They are realising now the fans are the entertainment a lot of the time. They will be there through thick and thin. It’s their club, especially the Crawley fans, it’s not my club.

“They make the clubs.”
