Dates are being bandied around by clubs to get the season up and running, and it now appears it’s August 29 or September 12 which are the two likely options.

That is the target being earmarked to begin the new term, with a quick turnaround needed to avoid a congested 2020-21 campaign.

It means that the Reds are likely to be back in training on August 1. And manager John Yems cannot wait to get going.

He said: “It’s going to be either August 28/29 or September 12. But what they haven’t told you is when they are back training. I would like to think we would be back August 1. I would go back tomorrow if I could. I think we are at the stage now where everyone is fed up with it.”

And the talk is a third of a ground’s capacity could be allowed to watch the games.

Yems said: “It will not affect Crawley too much as the capacity is about 6,000 and we get around 2,000.”

Part of the frustration from Yems is that he wants to get his squad together.

He said: “You just want to get back in and meet the new players and get everyone back in together and just get going. It’s getting past the boredom stage now. We just want a little bit of clarity with everything. It’s all rumours at the moment.”

The club have already announced two new signings with Sam Ashford and Sam Matthews joining. Yems says more business has been done but the club cannot announce it until August 1.
