Crawley Town will open negotiations with their soon to be out of contract players in the next couple of weeks.

There are 13 of the 18 current members of the permanent playing staff whose deals are up at the end of the season (listed below), meaning they would be allowed to leave for free if they fail to agree extensions.

Manager John Gregory says talks will start before the end of the month and has already indicated that an offer will be made to midfielder Mike Jones, with the club likely to do the same for the likes of Dannie Bulman, Mat Sadler and goalkeeper Paul Jones.

Gregory has also indicated that the option to extend Billy Clarke’s contract for another year will be taken up.

More uncertain could be the futures of peripheral squad members such as young defender Alex Malins - who has joined Lewes on loan until the end of the season - as well as midfielder Gary Dicker and striker Rory Fallon.

“We are still aiming to finish as high as we possibly can. There’s still plenty to play for, the players are playing for their futures, for new contracts from us and for some, contracts from other clubs watching and I hope they go into every game with that in mind,” Gregory said ahead of the defeat at Port Vale on Tuesday night.

“It (contract talks) will happen before (the end of the season), in the next couple of weeks I expect, certainly by the end of April we’ll have sat down with everybody (out of contract).

“I’d like to think after the next five or six games this month we’ll be in a position to hold discussions with the players.”

The Reds boss will begin shaping the squad in his own mould over the summer having made promotion to the Championship the aim, and he is already on the look out for goalscorer after his side’s recent drought.

Gregory does not expect contract negotiations to be completed straight away and has admitted that some of the squad may seek a new challenge elsewhere.

He said: “I wouldn’t expect the players to agree straight away, it’s like selling your home, you never accept the first offer. Some will maybe have offers from elsewhere and many of them have children so their families always have an involvement.

“Of course I’d be very upset and hurt to lose anyone we are trying to hang onto, but at the end of the day I respect the decisions of whatever anybody does.”
