Crawley Town manager Mark Yates rued their poor finishing.
Gavin Tomlin twice went close in the opening exchanges against Carlisle United.
Lee Barnard and Lyle Della-Verde also missed the target from good positions.
Yates said: “We had three or four good chances, Jack’s (Rose) made a couple of good saves, first half.
“But when you miss chances and goals are a bit hard to come by at the moment for the group so you put pressure on yourself to keep a clean sheet.
“I thought they were great in the first half, the group, really good. I asked them to go out with the same intesity and I thought they did.
“I thought we had a 15-minute spell where we just dropped off a bit, but we kept pressing, we kept playing.”
Yates revealed that players are feeling the effects of playing an exhausting season with a small squad.
He said: “I think the season has caught up with a few - I think the lack of numbers that we’ve had, the lack of quality at times has been typified in this last run of games.”
