Crawley Town midfielder Luke Rooney played for American club Arizona United SC on Saturday in a cup match.
He played the first half of a 0-0 draw with Swope Park Rangers, apparently while Reds boss Mark Yates who did not know where he was.
The midfielder joined on a one-year deal in June for second spell with Reds, having played five appearances under former boss Richie Barker in 2013 on loan from Swindon Town.
The 25-year-old had made 22 appearances this season scoring one goal, but his last at the start of February in the 1-0 win against Stevenage, appears to have been his last.
Yates claimed he didn’t know where the midfielder was after not turning up for training last week.
And when pushed on if Rooney had a future at the club Yates replied: “Probably not”.
When he joined in the summer, Rooney claimed he had ‘unfinished business’ and wanted to show the fans what he could do after a tricky first spell.
He said: “I’m looking forward to showing the Crawley fans what I am capable of. It’s almost a case of unfinished business if you like because when I was here before I don’t think I started a game.”
