Mark Yates’ side took the lead in the 22nd minute when defender Christian Scales tapped in from close-range.

Hastings equalised just five minutes later when Bright Temba fired past the diving Callum Preston.

The visitors’ defence held firm and in extra-time substitute Sam Adams headed in from five yards to put Hastings through to the next round.

Crawley made ten changes to the side which lost 2-1 to Luton Town in the FA Cup, although it was a strong side looking to impress manager Mark Yates.

Reds striker Gavin Tomlin had the game’s first chance as his swerving shot from 20 yards out was well saved by United goalkeeper Josh Pelling.

Crawley then took the lead when a deep Mitch Hancox corner was headed back into the box by Jon Ashton where Scales calmly finished.

The Red Devils nearly doubled their lead after Shamir Fenelon’s cross was deflected onto the post.

However, the Ryman League side made it 1-1 after Temba was first to react after Reds goalkeeper Preston parried a Jack Harris shot.

Just after half-time, a Hastings cross from right back Sam Crabb was deflected onto the crossbar.

The Reds began to get frustrated as the United players blocked everything Crawley threw at them.

Four minutes from the end, Lee Barnard’s powerful strike hit the crossbar, keeping the score at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

In extra-time, Deacon made Pelling pull off a good save down to his left after a string of good Crawley passes.

With 108 minutes played, a dangerous Richardson-Brown cross was headed in by Adams to win it for the visitors.
