He also wants to extend central midfielder Richard Wood’s loan from Rotherham which expires after Saturday’s home game against Leyton Orient.

Saunders said: “If Izale McLeod was to get injured we’d be stuck so I would like to bring in someone in that area (striker) before that happens.

“I don’t care what shape he is as long as he can score!

Saunders revealed he is to speak to Crawley Town’s owners and also ex-Reds boss Steve Evans, manager of Rotherham about letting Wood stay in West Sussex.

Saunders said: “He wants to stay and we want him to stay and I will be speaking to the owner today and hopefully we can keep him.

“I’ve got to speak to Rotherham - I haven’t spoken to them yet. They have just signed a lad from Derby so hopefully they might let us keep him.

“Steve Evans likes the club, and he used to be manager of the club, so hopefully he will do us a favour.

“Wood is doing well and he scored again the other night, so that would be great.”

Wood has played in six games since joining in February and has scored twice and during that spell Reds have beaten Swindon Town, Colchester and Port Vale and drew with Sheffield United.
