The Reds have just gained two spectacular 3-2 away victories in the space of four days against Colchester United and Port Vale.

Crawley now lie fourth from bottom and just two points from safety.

This week could prove to be crucial if they are to beat the drop with a home game against relegation rivals Leyton Orient next up at the Checkatrade.com Stadium this Saturday.

Saunders said: “We got a terrific three points on Saturday at Colchester. The challenge for the players now is to back it up,

“The funny thing is the performance wasn’t as good as some of our other recent games but the points are more important now. I’d settle for four or five scrappy 1-0 wins between now and the end of the season.

“The spirit in the squad is really good. The boys all believe we can get out of trouble but we have to keep trying to improve all over the pitch.”

Ryan Dickson and Lewis Young both shook off up knocks to play at Vale Park on Tuesday night.

Saunders hopes to add to the squad this week in time for their home game against Leyton Orient but would not reveal who could be in his sights.

He said: “We still need strengthening. We have a shortage of players who can offer different things and I will be trying to bring someone in if I can.”
