The central defender was expected to stay at the Checkatrade.com Stadium until May 3 but Millers manager Steve Evans used a clause in his contract where he could be recalled at 24 hours notice.

Richard played ten games for the Reds and scored three goals.

The move causes manager Dean Saunders a selection problem as both Dean Leacock and Darren Ward are out injured. This could see Marvin Elliott drop back into defence to play alongside Sonny Bradley or for new signing Kelly Youga to make his debut,

Manager Dean Saunders said: “It’s a blow because Woody has defended really well and scored some goals. He’s part of the team which has kept three clean sheets in four games. It’s a disastrous time to lose him but I’d like to thank Rotherham for loaning him to us.”

Former Crawley boss Evans said: “He’s an experienced professional and in his 10 or 11 games at Crawley, he’s simply been their best player.”
