He praised goalscorers Anthony Wordsworth and Lee Fowler who only signed for the club on Friday afternoon on loan from Conference club Nuneaton.

Saunders said: “I could see there were things getting better and better. Today was a scrap first half - we scored a great goal - great cross from Lewis Young and Anthony Wordsworth got a great goal and his instinct for scoring is why I brought him to the club. He getting fitter and that’s the best game he has had for the club.

“Lee Fowler is more talented than anyone in this league. He just makes the game look easy. He’s just got to look fit, He’s 31 and has wasted his talent up until now - he should be playing at least in the Championship.

“I had him at Wrexham and Doncaster and he was the youngest player to play for Coventry at 16.

“You can see he’s a really good football and can do things other people cannot do. It was a great goal he scored and it was a good win for us. I thought we deserved it and we had loads of other chances as well and not taken them.

“It was disappointing we conceded from a corner. All in all it was just the three points we needed and hopefully gives the players confidence.”
