Speaking at the fans’ forum on Monday chief executive Michael Dunford revealed: “Two or three groups came forward. We had lengthy discussions with them but found that none of them came up to scratch.

“We would all like to leave a legacy to improve the future prosperity of the club.

“Over the last four years over £5 million has been gifted to the club by benefactors with no strings attached. This club is one of the few in the country which is completely debt-free.

“The club is still for sale. It would be foolhardy of us as directors to take the first offer on the table.

“We must wait until the right group of people come along and make a genuine offer which surpasses the current ownership.”
