Dean Saunders admits: ‘The Gods have turned against us’

Reds held a 3-2 lead with three minutes to go which would have put a distance between them and their relegation rivals.

Instead they conceded two late goals by the Posh’s Michael Bostwick and Conor Washington produced a devastating 4-3 defeat which put them back in the relegation zone.

Saunders said: “Everyone in the dressing room is devastated.

“We were three minutes away from staying in the league and things were looking good.

“The Gods have turned against us today. We were really, really unlucky.

“Everything seemed to be going to plan. The goals today, you don’t want to happen to you.

“Considering they were playing for nothing they gave it a great go, so well done to Peterborough.

“I thought we were in control of the game and they didn’t look like scoring.

“Izale’s had a clean chance to put the game away but missed to put us through, 4-2, game over.

“The game has slipped through our fingers and luck wasn’t with us.

“Three of their goals hit the post and then went in.”

Saunders believed Crawley were on the way to victory after goals by Marvin Elliott, Mathias Pogba and Josh Simpson gave them what appeared to be a match-winning 3-2 lead.

He said: “Scoring three goals away from home should be enough. Bostwick’s hit one from 25 yards - you want decisions to go in your favour and for them to miss sitters.

“Instead they hit three unbelievable strikes.

“On the positive side we scored three great goals. The disappointment’s hard to take but we’ve got to put it behind us, move on to next week and if we win next week we’ll be alright.”
