The midfielder turned down a short-term offer to stay on at Crawley Town after injury problems only allowed him to make nine appearances last season.

In June Reds manager Mark Yates said: “Josh Simpson has been a great servant of Crawley Town over the last four years and he will always be a welcome visitor to the club.”

Simpson played 165 times for Crawley, having been recruited by then manager Steve Evans in December 2010, and worked under Pilgrims assistant Craig Brewster.

He has also played for Peterborough United, Southend and Cambridge United.
