Mark Yates has plenty of attacking options post McLeod

The Crawley boss doesn’t see a stand-out top-scorer in his ranks, but with six attacking options, he doesn’t see that as a problem at all.

And so it is proving; Gwion Edwards has netted in all three league games so for and Roarie Deacon notched a delightful double at Cambridge on Saturday.

Yates has backed the summer triallist to play his part this season and build on his brace, he said: “I think he can do it. I have total faith in him, but he has got to believe it himself.

“I just want him to be positive as he is a really talented player that I saw in pre-season and saw over the years, but he has just got to start having that little bit more devilment in him and thrust about him, rather than just going through the motions sometimes - not that he has, but I think sometimes he can give that impression.

“I told him I wanted shots and end product off him. I have four or five shots off him today, he hit the bar and scored two and he was that link-up that can provide goals and he’s a decent footballer as well.

“That’s what he needs. For me none of them are going to get 25 goals, but I want them to chip away. Even with the group that we have got, we can still come to a place like Cambridge - who will be up there come the end of the season - and still stick three past them away from home.

“That’s a good sign for me.”

Yates also revealed he felt for Lee Barnard having played twice as a lone front man and then dropping to the bench when they played a more attacking formation on Saturday.

He added: “Barny is a bit unlucky really as I have played him by himself in two games really, so he is a bit unfortunate. But I fancied Matt coming back to Cambridge after having a loan spell last year to come and show people his true form.

“I do not think he necessarily did last year, but he is proving a real handful and Roarie alongside him and Barny, they can chip in with goals.”
