Sergio Torres ‘very worried’ about Crawley Town future

But the popular player - who made his first start for nearly three months on Tuesday night - says he hasn’t given up on earning a new Reds deal and insists he has no regrets about turning down offers to leave the club.

Torres, handed only his second league start of the season and first since December 29, played 65 minutes of the 2-0 defeat at home to Sheffield United and earned praise from his manager John Gregory for his performance given how little playing time he has had.

After the match the 32-year-old said: “I was really looking forward to a game, the manager told me yesterday I was going to start and it’s been a while, it’s been hard but I just kept going and hopefully I will get the chance.

“I thought I did alright, we worked hard but the result just didn’t go our way. I thought we played the best football today but they were more ruthless in front of goal and they scored when we were playing our best football.”

The Argentinian remains a firm favourite amongst the Crawley fans but he knows the remaining games are a big chance to either earn himself a new deal at the Broadfield or catch the eye of another club.

“It’s coming to the end of the season and a lot of boys including myself are out of contract, so it’s a lot to play (for) in these last 11 games, and if it’s not going to be here we need to do our best so hopefully someone is going to look at us.

“You never know what can happen but I’ve got a family to look after and that’s very worrying.”

Torres had the chance to join Steve Evans’ Rotherham last season, and came close to leaving before John Gregory replaced Richie Barker as manager in December.

But insisting he has absolutely no regrets about staying, Torres said: “I was very close to leaving before the gaffer came in and I thought new manager, I’m going to try and I played a few games, thought I did alright but I was unlucky to come out of the team.

“Now I’m in but I don’t know what’s going to happen. I love this club, it’s my fourth season, I’ve been through a lot, good times and bad times and I love the club, I love the place, the fans, everything and living in Brighton with my family. It’s going to be hard moving away but that’s life and people move on.”

Torres has made just a handful of starts over the last two seasons and he insists wherever his future lies he just wants to getting back to playing regular football.

With sixth-placed Peterborough continuing to slip up Reds remain 12 points off the final play-off spot with three games in hand, but Torres added: “There’s only 11 games to go and of course we want to win every game but it’s hard.

“We don’t really speak about play-offs, we want to get equal in games first and then see where we stand. We need to keep playing football like we did today.”
