VIDEO: Richie Barker - ‘As a team and individually we were way off’

Crawley Town manager Richie Barker laid into his team for easing off after a promising start before losing 3-2 against lower level opponents Newport County, describing some of the play as ‘unacceptable.’

He highlighted Mike Jones’ technical ability for scoring their second goal from the centre circle but stressed this was one of the few highlights of the night.

Barker praised: “If you are going to have a ball drop to somebody in the centre circle with an empty goal you’d want it to be somebody like Mike Jones because technically he’s excellent.”

But he criticised: “After the first 20 minutes we weren’t covering ourselves in glory considering who we were playing against. As a team, individually we were quite a way off.

“I said to the players at half-time it wasn’t acceptable as it was and it didn’t get any better. Conceding a goal from a penalty and a sending-off in the second half isn’t acceptable either.”

But he added: “In the second half we created some really good chances and the goalkeeper pulled off some very good saves but there were very few positives.”
