Crawley's Flahavan enjoys emotional return to Fratton Park

The-37-year-old former Bournemouth stopper has a lot of memories having been on their books at Pompey from 2010-11, even though he didn’t make any appearances.

Also his brother Aaron played 93 times for Portsmouth between 1996-2001 before sadly dying in a car crash at the age of 25.

Darryl thanked the Portsmouth fans for the warm welcome he received.

He said: “It was quite an emotional day for me to come back here having been here myself and my brother having been here.

“For me, I just wanted to put in a good performance. The fans here were fantastic with me and gave me a great reception so I’d like to thank them as well for that. It’s a special place for me, this club.

“They kept picking the ball up and it felt like wave after wave of attack and it was very difficult for us to contain them.

“The full-backs were overlapping and playing those little balls in between our full-backs and centre-halves.

“They were getting in behind quite a lot and it was a really difficult first half.

“Effectively that was the game (won) at 2-0 at half-time. It was an uphill struggle for us second half.

“Gwi (Gwion Edwards) has hit the bar and we have had a couple of half chances. The positives is that it was a far better second half display.

“I don’t know whether they (Portsmouth) took their foot off a little bit but I like to look at it from our point of view and give us the credit. We performed a lot better, got on the ball and had a bit possession.

“With good teams, you can’t keep giving the ball back to them because they will punish you. I’d be amazed if this side don’t go up.”
