Crawley's Gwion Edwards aims to surprise Plymouth

Crawley Town player Gwion Edwards is hoping Reds can reproduce the sort of form which gave them a half-time lead last week at Accrington when they host second-placed Plymouth this afternoon.

The former Swansea youngster believes his new attacking partnership with Matt Harrold could result in a welcome three points.

Edwards, 22, said: “In the first half we were the better team. We had the better chances and the side was solid after the goal.

“In the second half we were off it. We expected them to come at us the way they did, but we didn’t react really.

“We seemed to drop off which invited pressure on us.

“We got to start doing that more of what we did in the first half. If we had done that we’d have won it.”

Edwards admitted Reds will miss midfielder Simon Walton who will not play against his former club as he starts a three-match ban for his controversial red card following the brawl during the Accrington game.

Crawley appealed to the FA against the ban, but the appeal was turned down and the decision was upheld.

He said: “It would have been good to get the appeal overturned as Simon has started virtually every match and makes the team tick.

“We’ll see what formation we play on Saturday. But there’s no reason why someone else can’t play well out of position.”

Recently Edwards has been playing in a more advanced role alongside Matt Harrold and he has relished the change which has resulted in a goal for each of them against Stevenage and Accrington respectively.

He said: “I am really a winger but I’m likely to win my race with the centre half.

“I enjoyed playing further forward with Matty (Harrold). He can win the flick-ons and I can run on behind.

“Hopefully we’ll be a bit more solid and can play like we did in the first half against Plymouth.”

Edwards reckoned they were unlucky losing 2-1 to the Pilgrims when they two sides met in Devon in September.

He said: “It was a game we should have got a point from as it was 1-1 and they scored a late winner from a free-kick.

“Our home form is better than away, so this time there’s no reason why we can’t get a win!

“If we can do that and go on and get three wins on the trot, that will help raise our confidence.”
