New captain Jimmy Smith’s goal on the hour mark clinched Crawley Town a 1-0 victory, their first at home since March 1 when they beat Newport.

It was a thrilling end-to-end match that gave the buoyant home fans their first victory in seven months and Drummy his first as manager.

The head coach said: “I haven’t really rehearsed a victory speech yet. It was really pleasing, I thought the spirit epitomised everything I want the club to be about, that’s staff and supporters.

“It’s a great day and nice start for us. Ziya (Eren) the president has come over and there has been a lot of work.

“If you lose, everyone says talk is cheap, but it is nice to see the spirit of the club and that’s the standard we set.

“We won’t accept any less and the fans know what they will get every week.”

Reds look slightly shaky at the back in the first half, but grew into the game and shut-out their visitors while creating numerous chances themselves.

They also had to play out six minutes of added time with ten men as debutant Andre Blackman was shown a second yellow for dissent late on.

Drummy added: “We had to defend to the hilt at times. We didn’t play our best football, but the other side of the game, the players managed that and full credit to them.

“We created great chances, Jordan (Roberts) could have scored first half. I just thought that as the game went on with Andre getting sent off, Matt Gray was in my ear with the organisation. He was brilliant.

“I don’t think there were too many bad tackles, but they have to put their bodies in there. You can’t let teams play, espcially if they go direct, you can’t let them put the ball down your throat.

“Anybody can shut down anyone, but if you get kicked and hit then that’s life.”
