EP exit John O’Hara Cup on penalties

East Preston Football Club were knocked out of the John O’Hara Cup at the third round stage after a penalty shoot-out defeat at Sidley on Tuesday evening.

After the game finished 1-1 after extra-time, the home side went through as they won 5-3 on spot-kicks.

After a scoreless 90 minutes, Sidley took the lead nine minutes into extra-time when Andy Hales struck. That was the way things stayed until three minutes from time when Fred Foreman headed home a Matt Axell free kick.

Sidley then scored all five of their penalties, while Foreman shot EP’s third spot-kick wide.

EP manager Dominic Di Paola said: “It was just one of those games. We dominated possession but just didn’t do enough with it and it was a bit like the Celtic verus Barcelona match last week.

“We had a lot of half-chances but didn’t do enough in the final third, while they had two chances and scored from one of them. I felt they played for penalties from the first minute and it worked for them as they’re through to the next round and we’re not.”

EAST PRESTON: Ender; Duncan, Franks, Elliott, Hartley; Clark, Shelley, Barnard, Foreman; Simmonds, Grantham. Subs: O’Hagan (Duncan 75), Axell (Hartley 80), Boddy (Simmonds 90).
