Exeter 0 Crawley 1: Yorwerth fires Reds to away win

Josh Yorwerth came off the bench to score his first goal for Crawley Town and earn them a 1-0 away victory at Exeter City.

He scored with a stunning strike with seven minutes to go to collect the three points and maintain Reds’ unbeaten start to their League 2 campaign.

Reds made just one change to the team which drew 1-1 at Doncaster with Mark Connolly returning from suspension and replacing Joe McNerney in central defence.

Crawley went close in the opening exchanges when Enzio Boldewijn ran down the right and cut the ball back to Josh Payne who sent a curling shot narrowly over the bar.

Boldewijn narrowly missed James Collins and in another move, Billy Clifford curled an effort over the top.

Exeter went close when Jimmy Smith made a mistake and allowed Ollie Watkins in to take a shot which hit the bar.

Payne volleyed over a chance having received the ball when a cross into the box was only half-cleared.

Just before the break Boldewijn showed a great turn of pace to leave his marker trailing before finding Collins whose shot was parried clear by keeper Bobby Olejnik.

In the second half Jason Banton curled an effort wide on the counter-attack, then Boldewijn showed more staggering pace but this time could not reach Collins with his cross.

Matt Harrold came off the bench for Billy Clifford as Reds changed from 4-2-3-1 to 4-2-2.

The Grecians had their best chance of the game when Connolly’s clearance found Watkins, who fired over the bar.

Robbie Simpson headed wide for Exeter while for Crawley, Collins volleyed over the bar, while Mersin denied Watkins.

In the last few minutes Connolly made a fine block to keep out Ryan Harley’s goalbound shot.

Josh Yorwerth came off the bench to replace Josh Payne in central midfield.

Within five minutes the substitution paid off when Yorwerth beat two opponents before slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
