Be patient and you'll get the success - that's the message from former Crawley Town manager John Yems.

The ex-caretaker boss, who kept Reds in the Conference in 2007, is good friends with fellow Londoner, head coach Dermot Drummy and believes he is the right man for a fruitful future.

Yems, who is currently football operations and recruitment manager at Premier League side Bournemouth, has been keeping a close eye on proceedings at the Checkatrade Stadium over the summer.

He’s been meeting ex-Arsenal and Chelsea youth coach Drummy most weeks and offering advice and another ear behind the scenes.

Yems knows the area well, having coached and managed at Reds as well as working with players at Three Bridges for many years, before becoming part of the coaching team behind Eddie Howe on the south coast.

He has described Drummy and assistant Matt Gray as ‘good, honest, people’ and promises they will give it their all. Yems, who lives in Horsham, said: “It’s nice to see someone I know back at Crawley. I have known Dermot a while, he is a very, very good coach. He’s got a good assistant in Matty.

“Derm knows what he wants to do, he will work hard and there will be no lack of effort between him and Matt that’s for sure.

“They want to do well there and the supporters need a bit of credit for the way they have stuck around the club.

“They are a good lot of supporters at Crawley, like everybody, they have their moans and groans, but they are entitled to. Most of them have stuck through it, hopefully they will see through this and hopefully Derm leads the club onto higher things.

“Him and Matt are good, honest people. They will do well there. It reflects what I know about him, he is a football man, same as Matt.

“Sometimes when you have points to prove to people it won’t be through lack of enthusiasm if you can’t do it.

“For me the secret of it all, you give every job you ever do your all as Dermot and Matty will do.

“It doesn’t matter what division you are in working in, you have still got to graft and they will graft to be successful.

“I think it will be a good season for them, it will be a big learning curve for the club as he will take them forwards, if they want him to.

“The supporters have to bear with him as he will turn it.”

Yems has been lending Drummy some of his local knowledge and played a part in the training ground deal at Ifield Green.

The pair are in close contact and Yems added: “With Dermot not being from the area, I have helped him a bit in the area. Him and Matt have got their hats together getting the players in.

“I may be helping him out with a few loanees later in the season, because we are from London we know a lot of the same people.

“I have shown him around and we talk all the time, about players, football and generally as the season goes on I will help him as much as I can.”

And the former Crystal Palace and Fulham Academy coach also believes a link with Ryman League outfit Three Bridges is just what the local area needs to benefit both parties. He added: “It’s good they have a tie-up with Three Bridges, Bridges have done really well over the past couple of years. Paul Faili and Keith George down there have done really, really well. It’s good for Crawley as an area.

“I have a lot of time for the people there, look at where that has come over the past few years from when I was doing a bit there. The tie-up, hopefully, will be a good thing for the young ones.

“It gives the kids somewhere to play, and then get recognised professionally.”
