The central midfielder was in no mood for hiding and his trademark honesty showed through as he exclaimed, ‘it’s my fault’ after their 2-1 defeat to Gillingham.

Fowler, 31, who is on loan from non-league Nuneaton Town, blamed himself for switching off when Jermain McGlashan headed home the winner on 82 minutes.

He said: “I think we gifted them the three points really rather than them playing well. I thought we started off brightly in the first half and then dominated the second half with all them having the counter-attack.

“I thought the performance was a bit slow and laboured and we have shot ourselves in the foot, really.

“I am disappointed as it was my fault for the second goal, but we have to regroup and go again now.

“We let them have a lot of possession of the ball, for me, you need to go out on the front foot and second half we were on the front foot, played some good football and got back into the game.

“There was only one team in it, but they had the counter attack towards the end and it’s disappointing.

“It was my fault, I had switched off and the lad has played a one-two around me. They played a ball over the back and the lad has scored.

“We had the momentum with us at 1-1 and we are thinking we are going to win the game. It feels like when we go a goal behind it kicks us into gear, but it just didn’t happen and we have to start again and go again against Crewe.”
