Golds hit Wick for six

Littlehampton Football Club gained the local bragging rights on Wednesday evening (January 2) when they beat Wick 6-0 at The Sportsfield.

Golds took the lead after just three minutes with a deflected strike from Ash Harper.

Harper doubled the advantage on 17 minutes after Lee Garnham’s effort fell into his path, before Garnham’s curling free kick hit the bar.

Wick could have pulled a goal back in the 24th minute as Joe Matthews picked out Dan Swain, however, Josh Bates was alert to make a vital challenge.

Ross McKay headed home Littlehampton’s third goal, before Wick were reduced to 10 men when Swain was dismissed for a second booking on 42 minutes.

Alex Kew and Harper combined for Danny Hand to make it 4-0 30 seconds into the second half.

Sub Nathan Peacock then struck from Kew’s header, after great work by debutant Scott Packer.

Littlehampton completed the scoring from the penalty spot when Mitchell Hand fired home, after his brother, Danny, was brought down.

Golds manager Mark Bennett said: “You always want to win the local derby but when you win 6-0 it just makes it sweeter.

“We didn’t get out of first gear in the first half but went in 3-0 up and, in the second half, we finished the job.”

Wick joint boss Dave Berkowitz said: “It was disastrous, Littlehampton are a good side, but that’s no excuse for the way we performed individually. “We didn’t win any personal battles, any headers, couldn’t pass the ball and, from our point of view, it was more hit and hope.

“We conceded a goal after five minutes and were up against it straight away. We didn’t have any personal pride about us and we just rolled over. I don’t think we helped ourselves much.”
