A cloud of fog had threatened the game going ahead but it cleared at pitch level moments before kick-off, allowing it to go ahead.

Hornets took the lead in the 24th minute when Billy-Joe King’s cross set-up Junior Kaffo to head home.

Crawley Down equalised 13 minutes later through a magnificent long-range strike by Karl Beckford.

The fog became thicker and descended to the pitch level during half-time and it looked impossible to continue.

However referee Peter Killip allowed the second half to start. It was a farcical spectacle with players and reporters unable to identify each other or see beyond a few yards.

Play was suspended two minutes after the restart and the players remained on the pitch, waiting to see if the dense fog would clear.

The referee finally called the game off when it was obvious visibility was not going to improve.
