In Crawley’s first game of football since March, Crawley fell behind before Ashford headed in the equaliser.

When asked how the goal felt he answered: “It felt good, nice to get the first 45 minutes and playing with the boys, I haven’t played with any of them before so nice to get a bit of chemistry building between them.”

Ashford also talked through his goal: “Free-kick, unbelievable ball from Brian (Galach), I was just in-between a couple of players and the ball’s just landed perfectly, little leap, into the net.”

Crawley went onto win the game, as Brian Galach’s well taken finish late on meant a winning start to Crawley’s pre-season campaign.

The 24-year old was spotted by Crawley after impressing in non-league with Hemel Hempstead Town, and he believes he is starting to gel with his new teammates.

He said: “It was quite hard for me, coming from non-league into my first time in full-time football and I was a bit shocked, but it was nice to slowly get through the week and build more confidence. Coming into the game I felt a lot better, but it’s been really good with the boys.”

This season will be Ashford’s first in professional football, having previously had spells with Concord Rangers, East Thurrock and Witham Town, and he believes he is looking forward to getting more game time with the Reds.

He said: “I definitely need more minutes, 45 felt like a long time, it’s been ages but hopefully I should gain more minutes each time and get fitter and fitter really.”

Crawley’s first game of the season is now less than a month away, as they play on Saturday the 12th of September, with the fixture list set to be announced this Friday.
