Rumours are circulating that the striker could be about to seal a long-awaited move from League One side Oldham Athletic.

The Shoreham-born 25-year-old is top of many Reds’ fans summer wish list after proving a hit in his loan spell at the Checkatrade Stadium last season.

Murphy is under contract with the Latics until the end of the 2016-17 campaign, but the rumour-mill is in overdrive in Lancashire that he could be set to join Reds.

Head coach Dermot Drummy, who worked with Murphy at Arsenal, has been coy on the young striker’s future, but admitted he is an admirer.

He also stated last week that they were closing in on a forward, saying: “The club are close to bringing in a striker and it could either be a loan move or a permanent deal.

“It could be (a loan deal), but it might not be. It might be that we get him (permanently).

“We are close on one but we have to wait on the club he is with to find out what is happening with them.

“Until that club decides where they are with him, we can’t move on that one.”

All the pieces in jigsaw seems to point to the fact that Murphy is that man, especially with the waiting game, as Oldham themselves are in limbo and currently without a manager.

Reds also now have a financial boost from the sale of Gwion Edwards to Peterborough, which Drummy has been told he can reinvest.
