Local lad Leon makes Gills debut

Bexhill boy Leon Legge made his debut for Gillingham on New Year’s Day.

The 27-year-old defender played the full 90 minutes as the Gills won 1-0 at Southend United to return to the top of the League Two table.

Legge has initially joined the Kent club on loan from League One outfit Brentford until January 29 when the move is expected to be made permanent.

He wrote on social network site Twitter on Monday evening: “Thanks for all the kind messages, left for various reasons, new chapter and wishing the lads a great season. Been a pleasure!”

Gills manager Martin Allen told BBC Radio Kent: “It’s great we’ve got him because a lot of clubs wanted him. For Mr Scally (Gills chairman Paul Scally) to get Legge and do that deal over the last few days, it’s been a lot of work.

“I was here all day Sunday trying to get it sorted out with the agent. But Mr Scally has pushed the boat out to get him.”

Legge joined Brentford from non-league Tonbridge Angels in summer 2009 and was named supporters’ player of the year at the end of his debut season. In just over three seasons at Griffin Park, he made 115 appearances for the Bees and scored 10 goals.

Brentford manager Uwe Rosler told the club website: “I want to thank him for the service he gave the club and to me; he’s an honest lad and gave his all and was an important member of the squad.”
