No heart over head for Crawley Town's Ashton on Stevenage return

Jon Ashton has stressed that emotions won't be getting in the way of his focus of taking three points at Stevenage on Saturday.

The experienced defender made more than 220 appearances in six seasons for Boro before being released at the end of last season and returns to his old club for the first time tomorrow.

Despite still living five minutes from the ground, Ashton, who signed a year-deal at Crawley last July, won’t be seeking any home comforts.

He is amongst a number of Reds players returning to their old club and despite seeing a few home fans out and about in Stevenage this week, it will be business as usual.

The 33-year-old said: “It will be the first time I have been back there, obviously since I was there last season.

“I am looking forward to it, but I am looking forward to getting three points more. We have not had the best of results in the last few weeks and we are looking to getting back to winning ways.

“I have seen a few (Stevenage fans) out and about and a few have mentioned they are looking forward to watching some familiar faces.

“There are a few of us, with Simon Walton, Roarie Deacon and Lee Barnard, who was on loan last season, going back and looking forward to it.

“Three points is the main thing, next best is a clean sheet and then the score sheet is a bonus.”

Having dropped to the bench for last week’s 1-0 defeat at home to Mansfield Town, which ended a run of three starts, Ashton is hoping to be back involved.

He said: “You always want to start games and play, but it’s down to the manager, he picks the team. And I am sure he will pick a team to go out there and win the match. Hopefully, I will be in there.

“I am still living in Stevenage so will not have to commute to Crawley, but personally I will prepare the same way, making sure I do things in the right way.

“It’s also not the far for the lads the live close to Crawley, so there won’t be much difference.”
