Ray: We deserved a point

Hastings United player-manager Sean Ray considered his team worthy of a point against high-flying Whitehawk.

The U’s twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw away to second-placed opposition in the Ryman Football League Premier Division yesterday (Boxing Day).

He said: “I thought a draw was probably a fair result. It wasn’t a great game. I can’t remember our keeper or their keeper having many saves to make.

“It’s a terrible place to go. It’s a terrible pitch, windy and we’ve got to be pleased with a point down there, coming from behind twice as well. But with a little bit more quality in the final third, we might’ve even got all three points.

“It was a battle and that influenced our team selection. We thought we would put a bit more strength in there and it upset their rhythm a bit.”

Of Tom Vickers’s spectacular 80th minute equaliser, Ray added: “It wasn’t bad. I don’t think you will see a cleaner strike all season. From the minute he hit it you knew it was in.”

Having drawn their last five league matches, United are now unbeaten in 10 and have lost just one of their last 16 in all competitions.
