Reds' goalkeeping trio will fight for number one spot

Crawley Town signed young former Liverpool and Millwall stopper Yusuf Mersin on a two-year deal this week adding to the signing of experienced Glenn Morris, who will have a player/coach role.

Reds are also close to signing a promising young loan goalkeeper and head coach Drummy has made it clear none are guaranteed the starting spot next season.

Drummy said: “With the loan situation, I want to get another one in because if it is suitable for the player, sometimes the professional club will meet us on the wages - which helps our budget.

“If he is a quality player and comes for the right reasons, then I want to do that as well.

“They will all come in as number one. They all have got to fight for their places. I wouldn’t take someone and say I’ll guarantee you every game as I don’t think that is right.

“I say beforehand, you have to compete for your place or we don’t take you and I mean that. It’s not he must play eight games, it won’t be written into any contract. They will compete the same as anyone else.

“It’s such a technical position. If we can get three in on the budget and with Glenn (Morris) doing the coaching role as well helps us, then I will be really happy.

“The goalkeepers have to be good with their feet for the way we want to play, so that’s a priority for me.”

Mersin, 21, is a London-born Turk, who stands at 6ft 5ins and has represented his country at under-18 level.

He joins the club from Turkish Premier League side Kasimpasa, having made the switch from Premier League side Liverpool in 2014.

Drummy said: “I believe with the other keeper I am bringing in, we will have good competition with all three candidates in that area. Experience in Glenn Morris and can the younger keepers rise to the challenge, that’s the challenge they are taking.

“We are very close on the third and it’s a bright prospect.

“The competition for places is most important, that is at the back and the midfield area. In my opinion, the good training that we want is knowing you are fighting for your place all the time.

“Sometimes you know when players are playing they become regular because of performance, but we are starting off afresh. While I am bringing in players, I want to see who competes best in training.”
