His departure takes immediate effect after a settlement payment on his contract was agreed.

Walton, 28, played 39 times for Reds last season, including 33 starts, and scored four goals.

Head coach Dermot Drummy said: “I had a chat with Simon earlier this week and we mutually agreed for him to leave the club.

“We thank him for his services and wish him all the very best for the future.”

In May Drummy said Walton was not in his plans for next season, despite him having a year left on his contract.

In June he then appeared to leave the door open for Walton to change his opinion and force his way back into the team.

Drummy said then: “It is there to be changed. I am not obstinate enough to say never say never, so let’s see.

“If people come back and want to be part of Crawley that is very important to me. If they want to be part of Crawley and try and work hard and change my opinion, then opinions are there to be changed.”
