The 31-year-old striker has been set to sign for two weeks but the new deal was held up due him being away on holiday.

Having joined Reds in 2014 he has played 62 games for the club scoring ten goals - nine of which came last season from his 39 appearances.

He has also shone in goal for Reds, putting in a man-of-the-match shift after playing more than a half between the sticks in 2015 against MK Dons - conceding twice to man-on-fire Will Grigg and England ace Dele Alli.

Harrold missed the end of last season after undergoing a knee operation, but is back fighting fit.

Head coach Dermot Drummy has hinted for week he was keen to sign last season’s top scorer and is pleased to finally be able to confirm the deal.

He said: “I’m delighted to have persuaded Matt to be part of what we are trying to achieve at the club next season.

“Even before I came to Crawley I had watched him several times and I know what he can bring. He can handle himself physically, which all strikers need to be able to do, but his touch and positional and team play is excellent.

“I know he is a popular player with the fans and I’m sure if we provide him with the right quality service he will score lots of goals for us.”

Harrold counts Southend United, Wycombe Wanderers, Shrewsbury Town and Bristol Rovers amongst his former clubs. His one-year deal has a year’s option.
