Super Selsey can make cup-final plans

Adam Hinshelwood’s team will face Rye in the final on April 24 after Graham Bush’s double and a Dan Hegarty goal saw off Hassocks at Lancing.

It finished a great week for the Blues, who came back from the dead to beat Lingfield 4-3 in the league at the weekend.

Bush was the semi-final hero, heading Selsey into a 12th-minute lead then wrapping up the win with an 86th-minute solo effort.

Hegarty put Selsey 2-0 up before half-time before the game grew scrappy and Hassocks pulled one back on 77 minutes.

Hinshelwood was delighted with victory over fifth-placed and is aiming to end the season with the cup and a climb up the division-one table.

The second aim was boosted when Jake Lafferty scored a last-minute winner against Lingfield.

Selsey fell behind to Aaron Courtney’s goal on five minutes.

Ollie Haggar’s first goal of the season meant Selsey went into half-time 3-1 down after Daryl Coleman’s double.

But Bush made it double figures for the season shortly after the restart, and goals from Omar Bugiel and Lafferty sealed a fine win for Selsey.

Manager Hinshelwood said: “We’ve played two of the teams in the top eight and given them really good games recently.

“We’ve given teams so many goals, which is a concern, but at the same time we’re looking good going the other way.

“It was good for the lads to get three points because I think that’s what they deserved. It’s a positive we’re matching the top teams but if we want to progress, we’ve got to tighten up.

“In the past two games we’ve kept pretty much the same squad and I think that’s really helped.

“With the squad we have there’s no reason we shouldn’t make the season one of our most successful in a while – that has to be our target.”
