Shamir Fenelon’s first goal for the club seven minutes from time saw Reds secure a 1-1 draw at the Checkatrade.com Stadium against second-placed Pilgrims.

In a game that the visitors dominated they led in the second half from Ryan Brunt’s headed goal, before Reds netted a late leveller.

Yates said: “When you go a goal down against a team that have won nine out of their last 13 away games, you feel the worst a little bit.

“But we stuck at it, showed resolve and I think we got a deserved equaliser. There was little in the game, they had a few long-range shots first half, but neither keeper was really tested within the box.

“We felt there was a handball, Paul Jones certainly did, in the build-up to their goal, but it was just nice to get an equaliser.

“We don’t draw many but that was a really good point today.

“It shows the players believe in themselves and we have a good spirit. We had to dig in and we did that.

“We stuck at it, we didn’t come apart and concede another one. It’s important, even if you get that equaliser in the 93rd minute, fortunately we got it before that, but it was well earned and well deserved.”

The Crawley boss also praised goalscorer Fenelon, who again had a positive impact off the bench.

He said: “I am delighted for him. It hasn’t quite happened, but he comes in everyday and puts a shift in.

“He’s a young enough kid to have a future in the game, be a threat and impose himself on the game for 90 minutes, but I am grateful he was in the right place at the right time.

Yates was also impressed with new signing Andy Bond and Brighton & Hove Albion loane Tom Dallison on their debuts.

He added: “I though they did great. Young Tom Dallison did exactly what I thought he would do. (He is) aggressive and strong and has real leadership qualities for a kid. He can be very pleased with his debut.

“Andy Bond was a bit of an unsung hero. Brought himself out of his contract at Chorley, came down desperate to show what he can do.

“It was all late and last minute. He was steady in their won tackles and headers and he can be pleased.”

Yates also confirmed that Matt Harrold picked up an injury over stretching in training and would be back next week.

While when pushed on Luke Rooney’s absence, Yates revealed he didn’t not know where he was after not training this week and he ‘probably doesn’t have a future at the club’.
