Lewis Young reminds Crawley head coach Dermot Drummy of Champions League winner Ashley Cole, but insists it is potential he sees in the full-back.

The former Northampton winger has signed a new one-year deal at Reds today, having agreed terms last week.

He has played a mix-and-match role at the club since joining in 2014 being deployed in defence and as a wide player under different managers.

But ex-Chelsea coach Drummy now sees him as a defence option and has told the 26-year-old brother of Manchester United winger Ashley, he like everyone will have to earn his place.

He said: “Initially, I am going to work him as a full-back because of his ability to get forward. He has great endurance and he reminds me of Ashley Cole dwhen he went to Chelsea.

“For Ash there were areas of his game he was having to improve all the time, but he was a stealer of the ball. I thought he was an intelligent player.

“I look as Lewis and think, you have that agility, we can work you in that aspect of a defender.

“I called him and said I see some potential and I use the potential, because he has come back and is ready to sign. We want to make him into a better player and we will work him in that position knowing we can also play him wide right.”
