Zamora delighted to be back with Brighton

The former England international, who left Queens Park Rangers at the end of last season, made his name with Albion, scoring 83 goals in just over three seasons between 2000 and 2003.

Speaking to Albion’s website, Zamora said: “I was holding out for it, I wanted to come back and everything just fell in place.

“I had a few offers from abroad but I turned those down, and now I’m happy to be back at Brighton where it all started.

“I just hope I do myself justice. There is going to be quite a lot of pressure and the fans are going to be expecting a lot, but they can rest assured I will be doing my best.

“I’ve spoken to Chris Hughton and he said we’ve been in almost every game, and only lost by one goal in the majority of games we lost last season.

“Hopefully I can make a difference and score one or two goals and get Brighton to where they should be. Promotion is the goal and I’m looking forward to the new season.”

Zamora joined Albion for £100,000 in the summer of 2000, having impressed during a loan spell the previous season - scoring six goals in six games under then manager Micky Adams.

After helping the Seagulls win back-to-back championships in 2001 and 2002, he eventually moved to Spurs for a record transfer fee received of £1.5m.

Subsequent moves to West Ham, Fulham and QPR followed; he helped Fulham reach the Europa League Final in 2010; he was called up to the England squad during Fabio Capello’s time in charge, but injury ruled him out of that year’s World Cup Finals.

He added: “I have always said that I wanted to come back one day. Now I’m here, I’m pleased to sign on the dotted line and to be back where I started.

“Just walking into the training ground and seeing the whole building and all the pitches is mind blowing and seeing where the club has come from 15 years ago.

“I’m so pleased for the club, I always kept an eye out for them, speaking to whoever was here at the time. More recently it’s been Nathan Jones who is first team coach.”

Albion manager Chris Hughton said: “We are absolutely delighted to have brought Bobby back to Brighton. He needs absolutely no introduction here. The Albion fans know everything about him, from his achievements in a Brighton shirt and right through his time with Spurs, West Ham, Fulham and QPR.

“I also know Bobby well, having worked with him during his time at Spurs, and he is a great professional; I know he will bring plenty of experience to the team, having played Premier League, European and international football.

“He will also bring a lot in terms of character to the club and to the dressing room - but most importantly, having played more than 30 times for QPR last season, he brings top quality to our offensive options.

“We still have work to do in terms of adding to the squad, including those offensive options, in terms of creating and scoring goals.”
