Girls scoop silver in tournament

BURGESS Hill School for Girls' under-16 hockey team took silver in the Sussex round of the National Schools' Hockey Tournament held in Horsham. Fourteen schools took part in the competition and the standard of play was very high.

In the group stage the girls played some superb hockey, showing some excellent attacking hockey and defending with determination.

They beat Farlington 2-0, Moira House 3-0, Seaford College 3-0, Roedean 1-0 and drew 0-0 with St Leonard's Mayfield to earn themselves a place in the semi- finals.

The team travelled to Christ Hospital to face Brighton College '“ the winners of the other section.

Burgess Hill dominated possession and were unlucky to go a goal down but fought back brilliantly to level the scores at 1-1.

Penalty flicks were used to decide who went through to the final, and with Sarah Locke making two fine saves and Anna George calmly converting the winning flick Burgess Hill were through to the final.

There they came up against their arch- rivals Millais School from Horsham. With three regional players in the side the girls found it hard to break them down, losing by three goals to one.

However, the girls showed tremendous character throughout the day to finish in second place in Sussex.
