Salvers enable Haywards Heath golfers to remember Dick

The Dick Heaver Salvers were first played for in 1999 in memory of Dick, who was captain in 1989 and a well-respected member of the Club.

It is a mixed foursomes Stableford. As she has done for the past 20 years, Margaret Heaver, Dick’s widow, with her playing partner Geoff Sear, who were club captains together in 1995, led out the field of 52 players.

In a welcome relief from the excessive heat of the week, all but a few managed to keep dry for most of the round.

Winning the Salvers, with 39 points, were Diane and Phil Allen, closely followed in second place by Margaret and Barry May, with 38 points. Third, also on 38 points on countback, were Lyn Deth and Bob Sansom. Congratulations to all the winners.

Unfortunately, current restrictions meant the usual presentation supper of steak and ale pie (Dick’s favourite) was not an option.

Diane was following up on her earlier win in the ladies’ 9-hole Waltz (1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3) competition with Donna Magrath and Niki Bover.

They scored 41 points, well ahead of the second placed team of Alison Hopson, Aisling Cloonan and Margaret Heaver, who scored a very respectable 38 points. Third were Janet Garbutt, Hester Gemmell and Julie Young.
