GOLF:RUNNERS-UP PYECOMBE CAN TAKE PRIDE

THE semi-finals and finals of the ladies' Sussex inter-club division one championship were held at The Nevill last week when Crowborough Beacon, Pyecombe, Rye and Worthing contested the event.

The four teams had put in the best overall performances in a season of divisional matches, competing against other clubs in the county. Each team of seven presented the lowest handicappers of their club.

Both semi-finals were very tight, going to the last green of the last match. Pyecombe sank a birdie putt on the 19th to go through 4-3 against Crowborough, and Rye's last lady played the 18th like a pro for a 4-3 win over Worthing.

At this stage Pyecombe were the underdog, having only been playing at this division 1 level for two years and facing a team of almost exclusively single-figure women from Rye.

Furthermore, Pyecombe's star scratch player, Aileen Greenfield, was hampered by a recent knee operation.

The lead two matches in the afternoon went to 19 holes and the third to the 20th. But Rye prevailed over Pyecombe with a resounding 6 to a half, winning their first division one victory.

However, Pyecombe went home happy with their performance and determined to do even better next year. Greenfield told her team: "I am so proud of you!" They comprised Aileen Greenfield, Alison Vermes, Jan Brittin, Angie Bainbridge, Anne Eves, Anne Prior and Sarah Godfrey.
