Gordon's Fontwell double is a big consolation

Trainer Chris Gordon and jockey Tom Cannon notched an impressive double at summery Fontwell Park - but Gordon missed out in the race he sponsored himself.

The Hampshire handler saw promising young rider Cannon steer 4/1 shot Marie Deja La to victory in the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Handicap Hurdle - a relief given that Cannon came a cropper on the same runner at the final fence a fortnight earlier at the same track.

Cannon was also a comofortable winner for Gordon in the bumper, the digibet.com Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race, on 100/30 contender Chilworth Screamer.

It meant Gordon went home happy despite his failure to land his own race - the Chris Gordon Racing Club 07975 668888 Handicap Hurdle - in which Cannon and Bon Spiel went off highly fancied but never got going.

That contest went to Kielan Woods on the Paddy Butler-trained What’s For Tea (7/1).

A sun-blessed seven-race card kicked off with the Rossetts Mercedes-Benz Commercials Novices’ Hurdle going the way of 8/13 favourite Milarrow, ridden by Brendan Powell for Colin Tizzard.

The Platinum And Lace Gentlemen’s Club - Brighton Handicap Chase was won by Try Catch Me, with Mark Quinlan on board for Petworth trainer Alison Batchelor.

The Weatherbys Bank Novices’ Chase, like the opener, went with the formbook as Daryl Jacob rode the Paul Nicholls-trained Current Event to a 24-length success.

And David Bass timed his run beautifully on Saskompliq (2/1 fav) in the Richard Venn Bloodstock Handicap Chase.

Sadly there were no successes on this occasion for this website’s tips.

Fontwell’s next meeting is on Tuesday, April 3.
