Ham Manor next for the National

RAIN and fog hit the first round of the Davies & Tate Trophy inter-club knockout competition on Saturday when local clubs East Sussex National, Seaford and Lewes were winners and Willingdon, Wellshurst, Piltdown and Mid Sussex were beaten.

The National pulled off an 8-4 win at West Sussex, who started without many of their Davies & Tate regulars. East Sussex juniors Ben Newsome and Chris Cannon landed an 8 and 6 win as the visitors led 4-0 after the morning foursomes while in the afternoon teenager Daniel Casey defeated former Sussex captain Gary Scarfield 6 and 4.

The National entertain Ham Manor in the second round.

Mid Sussex threw away a 3-1 foursomes lead to go under 24-14 on countback at Cowdray Park while Lewes led Hassocks 4-0 at the break and the teams reached an agreement on the final scoreline after the afternoon foursomes were fogged off.

Lewes now face a tricky tie at the Nevill, who defeated Highwoods by a point.

l Shepherd Neame has signed a three-year deal to sponsor the Sussex County Golf Union. The sponsorship will help provide kit for the County Union's first, colts and seniors teams and also pay transport costs.
