H&B coach: Big win was coming

That’s the view of the rugby club’s head coach Kevin Smith after H&B pulled off their first away victory since the opening day against a team which had lost just one of its previous 11 Kent One matches.

Smith, pictured, said: “We’ve been threatening that all season. The guys played very well. All credit to them, they stuck to a gameplan and executed it perfectly.

“It’s about making decisions and these guys made some very good decisions. If they make the right decisions, we can beat anybody. For the first time this season, they actually believed in what the coaches have been trying to get through to them.”

The 13-5 success has moved H&B above Sittingbourne to fifth. They are the second of four teams to have won six and lost five of their 11 matches, and they trail fourth-placed Shooters Hill by three points.

H&B will be keen to make it a triumphant end to 2011 when they reach the midway point in their league programme by welcoming ninth-placed Guys’ Kings’ & St Thomas’ Hospital to William Parker Sports College tomorrow (Saturday).

Smith added: “If you’re going to do well in any league, you’ve got to have consistency. If we get the consistency and play the way we want to play, we’ll beat most sides. I’m always confident, it doesn’t matter whether we’re at home or away. If your coach isn’t confident, it doesn’t leave any hope for anyone else.”

Elsewhere tomorrow, Rye RFC will attempt to build on their victory over Sussex One leaders Pulborough last weekend when they travel to third-placed East Grinstead II tomorrow. Both matches will kick-off at 2.15pm.
