H&B gunning for trophy scalp

HASTINGS & Bexhill Rugby Club believe they are capable of pulling off a major upset in the first round of the Sussex Trophy.

So says captain Kit Claughton going into the visit from a Brighton side which plies its trade two divisions higher up the pyramid.

H&B suffered their second defeat of the season in Sussex Division One at the weekend when they were beaten 19-15 by fourth-placed Uckfield, but Brighton aren't having the best of campaigns and sit second-bottom of London South East Division Three.

"I think we're going to have to believe we can win the game," Claughton commented, "but I think it would take our best performance of the season to beat them. We're going to have to play very well and hope there's a little bit of complacency on their behalf."

Ben Davies, Steve Lovick, Dave Milham and Roger Roberts are all injured, while Kris Dempster and Ilian Granville are major doubts. Kick-off at William Parker Sports College on Saturday February 4 is at 2pm.
