HOCKEY: Gubbins grabs Worthing victory at Eastcote

WORTHING secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory at Eastcote on Sunday to advance into the EHA Trophy second round.

The day before, Worthing had missed out on the chance to go top of the Kent/Sussex Regional League after they dropped two points in a 1-1 draw at Horsham.

Worthing midfielder Chris Sciandro said: "We performed really well against Eastcote.

"They play in the league above us in their region. We have a young side and had a couple of key players out, including captain Matt Ansell and goalkeeper Chris Binns, so we did very well to get a much-deserved win."

Dan Ginnaw opened the scoring for Worthing at the second attempt, before Cirdec Atkinson added a second from close-range.

Eastcote pulled a goal back before half-time and equalised early in the second half.

Alex Warner's penalty regained Worthing's lead, but Eastcote again levelled before Michael Gubbins got the winner at the far post.

Sciandro added: "It was a great team performance. An extra note goes to Matt Sewell. It was his first game for the first team, and he played excellently in a number of different positions throughout the game."

On Saturday, Worthing missed numerous chances in their draw at Horsham.

In the first half, Worthing had the better of the chances but Atkinson shot wide, and Ben Burriss' effort was deflected off-target.

Bryan Lock gave Worthing the lead midway through the second half with a powerful volley, but Horsham equalised five minutes later to grab a point.

Worthing's David Edmondson said: "It was a very tight game without a lot of chances. We looked strong in defence and started to find some space in the second half but couldn't find our form in front of goal."

In Division 1, Penguin won 6-2 at home to bottom-of-the-table Southwick with goals from Stu McConaghie (two), Dave Matthews (two), Moaz Hamid and Neil Watkins.
