IT'S ANOTHER LATE SHOW FROM GOLDS

PHIL CHURCHILL'S wonder strike three minues into stoppage time gave Littlehampton victory over runaway league leaders Horsham YMCA on Saturday. Golds had beaten Hassocks with an injury-time winner in their previous home match, and two goals in the final 10 minutes produced an excellent comeback against YM to inflict just their third league defeat of the season.

Golds' skipper Gary Young had possession of the ball just inside his half with seconds remaining, and lofted it forward to the tireless Mark Windsor. Windsor deftly flicked it to ex-YM man Churchill on the corner of the penalty area, and he curled the ball past YM keeper Ian Chatfield into the top corner.

For all their hard work, it had seemed that Golds were falling to defeat after Gary Bidwell's headed goal on 58 minutes.

But, with 10 minutes remaining Littlehampton got the equaliser they deserved. YM captain Barrie Westgate '” who won most things in the air '” picked up an injury moments before Golds won a corner.

YM boss John Suter put Lee Butcher on for Westgate, and from the resulting Peter Brackley corner, Golds' Daren Pearce was unmarked to head home from six yards.

The game could have been all over on 76 minutes, though. Bidwell's cross-field pass found Clinton Moore and his fierce drive from close-range was excellently saved by Golds' keeper Alex Bryant.

Three minutes before that, it had seemed like it was just not going to be Golds' day. YM keeper Chatfield's clearance hit Churchill, who ran on to the ball and laid it back to Windsor who would have had an empty net from 12 yards. But, the ball bobbled up off the turf and the chance went.

In the first half, both sides had cancelled each other out, so much so that neither forced a corner.

Grant Vanson side-footed over, and Churchill had a handball penalty appeal turned down in the opening quarter of an hour.

The only shot on target in the first period came on 34 minutes. Churchill's powerful effort from 20 yards was straight at Chatfield, though.

YM's best chance fell to left-back Nathan Sleat, but he shot horribly over when he tried to curl the ball into the top corner from 15 yards.
